Why I Love Platform University

Isn’t becoming a raving fan just the best?  Eh, actually it has been a while.  Let’s be honest.  We put up our guard in this over-saturated world of ours.  But every now and then, we find something that resonates with our core.  For example:  Platform University.

What is a Platform?

You have a platform.

What’s that burning message you want to share with the world?  You know, something that lights a fire you never want to quench?  Take a look at your Facebook feed.  I bet it’s there.

Often, this passion can turn into a blog, podcast, business, video series, book or speaking tour.

For example, Jon Acuff has built a platform around finding passion in your work.  His platform is in books, blogging, speaking and social media.

Another example:

My platform began in 2012 when Dontae and I became debt-free right before we became parents.

In 2013, I started coordinating Financial Peace University classes.

In 2014, the fire within me grew, so I drove to Franklin, TN and graduated from Dave Ramsey’s Financial Coach Master Series.

In 2015, my passion reached an all-time high.  I launched my first self-hosted blog – Piggy Bank Dreams – to share my financial insights with the world.  Now, I can roll my passions into a business platform – while we save for a house!

I could not be more excited.  Especially for what’s ahead.  More on that to come…

When I began this blog, I had a GIANT disadvantage:

Zero web training – except for posting adorable pictures of my family on Facebook.

What is Platform University?

Platform U. is an online monthly membership that sprouted from the book Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World by Michael Hyatt.  It gives bloggers, authors and small business owners the tools to build an online foundation around the topic that drives their passion.

Here are 6 key features of Platform U:

  1. Master Class – Led by experts in blogging, social media and internet entrepreneurship (i.e. Dave Ramsey, Dan Miller, Amy Porterfield and Jon Acuff).
  2. Backstage Pass – Michael Hyatt takes you behind the scenes.  He walks you through his own platform building process.
  3. Live Q & A – Having direct access to the Platform U. staff – including Michael Hyatt – once a month is a “wow” experience, every time.
  4. Member Makeovers – Hyatt and the Dean of Platform U. review a member’s actual site and give step by step advice to take it to the next level.
  5. Platform U How To – Monthly practical advice to help members – typically with a blog or social media
  6. Member Forum – Several thousand class members all in community together.

Why I Love Platform University

I didn’t graduate from college.

It’s the last thing I want to tell people.  But being real with you is more important than you being impressed with me.

I think college is awesome.  I just couldn’t find a degree program that “fit”.  All my life, I’ve wanted to be two things:  a writer and a mom.   I now have two beautiful children, but up until recently, I didn’t know what to write.

Now that my platform about frugal living is underway, I write every day.  I “publish” my best work twice a week to be read by a growing list of subscribers.  I’ve begun writing drafts to submit as guests posts on other blogs and am even participating in a writing competition.

If you are a budding writer, you’ll know how big of a deal that last paragraph is.

What school could offer a degree for someone who is a stay-at-home mom, passionate about families, money, faith and writing for the web?

I happen to know of one – and as of right now, it’s $30 per month to become a member.  [Raving Fan Alert]
