Why I Quit Checking Facebook Before Breakfast

red wall and benches

The other day, I set my alarm early to do some writing before breakfast. Before the kids woke up. Before washing the first load of laundry. Before answering emails.   Right on cue, my cell phone chirped beside my bed.  I reached over to silence the alarm and start my day. A new Facebook notification caught my […]

The challenge for any artist – and we are all creating something on the canvas of our lives – is to do our work well while letting go of the result. – Jeff Goins, The Art of Work

Recently, I conducted a Reader Survey.  You told me a topic that interests you greatly was Personal Development.  Funny you mention it.  I happen to think that topic is AWESOME.

That is why my book review for May is  “The Art of Work” by Jeff Goins.

Filled with great stories that challenge your heart and soul, this book will cause you to think twice about how you plan to spend tomorrow.

It’s packed with straight up truth.  Page after page, Jeff Goins nails it.

The overarching theme I kept hearing was:

Jeff worked a desk job before he was a full-time writer.  He launched a blog, wrote every day, wrote guest blogs and began speaking.  He even wrote several inspiring books leading up to his latest (and I believe his greatest) achievement:

You Are a Writer (So Start Acting Like One)

The In-Between: Embracing the Tension Between Now and the Next Big Thing

Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into your Comfortable Life

Now Goins is a full-time writer.  He followed his calling – as terrifying as that was.  What I love in The Art of Work is how zealously Goins walks the walk.

He believes in your calling, probably more than you do right now.

I followed Jeff Goins’ progress with this book via his blog.  It was really exciting to watch the publication of the final product.  You couldn’t help but be excited for him.  It was contagious.  Electrifying even.

If you are searching for your calling and need inspiration to lead the way, I invite you to read The Art of Work.

Join the Conversation:  Life may bring more than one calling into our lives.  What is one thing, great or small, that you know you’ve been called to do?

How To Get More Bang for Your Movie-Watching Buck

It’s movie night.  You drive to the nearest Redbox.  The movie you want isn’t at that kiosk.  Nothing stands out to you.  So you rent a couple movies, watch one of them, and forget to return them for a couple days.  You’re out +$5.00.  Ever done that?  I have. So you’re left with two options: […]

3 Essentials For Making Homemade Baby Food

Ethan eating baby food

When I became a mom, I was petrified of doing anything “unconventional”. Then I started reading about how healthy and cost-effective making your own baby food is. Hmm… I thought it would be too complicated.  That was until my own mother shared how she fed us by grinding up dinner with a food grinder.  Instant […]

What Has Been Your Greatest Financial Hurdle This Year? [Survey]

Photo Credit:  Jurgen Appelo (Creative Commons)   Every week, I select a different financial topic to blog about.  It has been a blast.  But I’ll admit – it’s largely guesswork figuring out what will resonate with people most.   After all, that’s my goal.  To offer ideas, encouragement and hope to others – while documenting all […]

3 Crucial Things I Learned From Losing My 401K

I lost my 401k.  Literally.  There was a check in an envelope sitting on the kitchen table, then the next day it was gone. Ever do something so hugely stupid that you can’t tell anyone? I kept thinking, “I’ll find it…yeah…I’ll totally find it.”  For three days I told myself that.   Brief Recap:  Last […]

How To Inexpensively Stamp Out Hunger Using Your Mailbox

OK, moment of transparency here.  I am awful at food drives.  Just hearing the phrase “food drive” makes me feel tired and guilty.  Tired because now I have one more thing to remember to bring somewhere.  Guilty because I’m probably going to forget.   It’s just the truth.   Yesterday, when I sifted through the […]
